The SDG is a plan of action for people, prosperity, peace, and partnership, calling for accelerated actions from various stakeholders for sustainable solutions to all of Africa’s biggest challenges, and to conduct voluntary national reviews of progress at the national and sub-national levels.
With less 10 years to go, an ambitious global effort is underway to deliver the 2030 promise—by mobilizing more governments, civil society, and businesses and calling on all people to make the Global Goals their own. In Africa, progress is being made, but overall, action to meet the Goals is not yet advancing at the speed or scale required. The decade of ambitious action seeks to deliver the Goals by 2030 and calls for accelerating sustainable solutions to all of Africa’s biggest challenges — ranging from poverty and gender to climate change, inequality, and closing the finance gap.
This Agenda is a plan of action for people, planet, and prosperity. It also seeks to strengthen universal peace in larger freedom. It recognizes that eradicating poverty in all its forms and dimensions, including extreme poverty, is the greatest global challenge and an indispensable requirement for sustainable development. All countries and all stakeholders, acting in collaborative partnership, will implement this plan. The objective is to free the human race from the tyranny of poverty and want and to heal and secure our planet.
As part of its follow-up and review mechanisms, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development encourages member states to "conduct regular and inclusive reviews of progress at the national and sub-national levels, which are country-led and country-driven" (paragraph 79). The voluntary national reviews (VNRs) aim to facilitate the sharing of experiences, including successes, challenges and lessons learned, with a view to accelerating the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. The VNRs also seek to strengthen policies and institutions of governments and to mobilize multi-stakeholder support and partnerships for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
The Regional Forum serve as a platform for the sharing of experiences, good practices and lessons learned in efforts to implement the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the African Union 2063 Agenda. Each year, the Regional Forum provides the framework for partnership and engagement in achieving the SDGs, by identifying and building a consensus on policy options and actions, to be adopted in the form of key messages and declarations, to drive actions toward accelerating the achievement of the two Agendas.
The African Youth SDGs Summit is Africa’s largest youth forum on the Sustainable Development Goals. Launched in 2017, the Summit has evolved to bring together a multi-sector coalition of youth, development experts, government and UN entities, NGOs, and the private sector to create the Africa we want together.
The Sustainable Development Goals Center for Africa (SDGC/A) is an international organization that supports governments, civil society, businesses and academic institutions in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Africa. The objective is to build upon Africa’s existing successes by bringing together people, ideas, and innovation to collectively reach a more sustainable future.
The IPRT is a web application sponsored by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and developed in response to the needs of African countries to simultaneously adopt and integrate both the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Agenda 2063 into their national development and enable them to report their progress in a harmonized way.
