SDG IN AFRICA

Achieving the SDGs in AFRICA

The SDG is a plan of action for people, prosperity, peace, and partnership, calling for accelerated actions from various stakeholders for sustainable solutions to all of Africa’s biggest challenges, and to conduct voluntary national reviews of progress at the national and sub-national levels.

Accelerate Achievement of the SDGs

Decade of Action

With less 10 years to go, an ambitious global effort is underway to deliver the 2030 promise—by mobilizing more governments, civil society, and businesses and calling on all people to make the Global Goals their own. In Africa, progress is being made, but overall, action to meet the Goals is not yet advancing at the speed or scale required. The decade of ambitious action seeks to deliver the Goals by 2030 and calls for accelerating sustainable solutions to all of Africa’s biggest challenges — ranging from poverty and gender to climate change, inequality, and closing the finance gap.

Agenda 2030

A Plan of Action for People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace, and Partnership in Africa

This Agenda is a plan of action for people, planet, and prosperity. It also seeks to strengthen universal peace in larger freedom. It recognizes that eradicating poverty in all its forms and dimensions, including extreme poverty, is the greatest global challenge and an indispensable requirement for sustainable development. All countries and all stakeholders, acting in collaborative partnership, will implement this plan. The objective is to free the human race from the tyranny of poverty and want and to heal and secure our planet.

AFRICA REGIONAL SDG INITIATIVES

Voluntary National Reviews

As part of its follow-up and review mechanisms, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development encourages member states to "conduct regular and inclusive reviews of progress at the national and sub-national levels, which are country-led and country-driven" (paragraph 79). The voluntary national reviews (VNRs) aim to facilitate the sharing of experiences, including successes, challenges and lessons learned, with a view to accelerating the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. The VNRs also seek to strengthen policies and institutions of governments and to mobilize multi-stakeholder support and partnerships for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
